Main State Archives in West Germany

According to Military Laws of the Allied Forces and later to the Federal Restitution Law (Bundesrückerstattungsgesetz BRüG) “aranyzed” assets and property of Jews deprived by the German State had to be restituted. Nowadays the restitution files (and a part of the compensation files) are stored in the relevant state archives.

The Main State Archives disclose information if a restitution file of a specific person exists and where it is stored. They check whether the files are still protected by privacy policy. If so, so-called „Schutzfristverkürzungsanträge“ can be filed, i.e. applications for reduction of the term or for access to the file before the end-date. The application is granted if a „berechtigtes Interesse“ (legitimate interest) can be demonstrated.
